Check structure
- Alignment
- The wings should be straight and true.
-
-
Check ailerons. This is best checked with the aileron linkage disconnected.
- The aileron hinges should be securely attached to both the ailerons and the wing and preferably pinned. To find out how to pin hinges, see Fail Deadly.
- The ailerons should move freely over the expected required range of movement - typically 20° to 30° up and down.
-
Check attachment of aileron control horns or torque rod system.
- The aileron horns (if fitted) should be rigidly attached (with mounting screws fully tightened) to the ailerons, preferably through a thin ply plate.
- Where torque rods are used to operate the ailerons, the torque rods should be securely fixed into the ailerons and retained by the wing trailing edge. There should be adequate clearance around the inboard (driven) end of the torque rods to allow adequate movement of the ailerons.
Radio installation.
- Check servo mounting.
- The aileron servo(s) must be mounted using the rubber grommets and eyelets supplied with the radio gear.
- The servo(s) should each be secured using the four supplied screws and tightened.
-
-
Servo arms.
- The servo arms must be retained using the supplied self-tapping screw and tightened.
- Any unused arms on the servo(s) should be removed.
-
Servo leads.
- Where fitted, servo extension leads must be securely connected. For a suitable method of securing male to female connectors, see Fail Deadly.
- The servo lead(s) should not be stretched.
Check undercarriage (if located on wings)
- Check attachment to wings.
- Check that all screws fixed to the undercarriage or undercarriage clamps are tight.
-
-
Check freedom of movement.
- Check that the wheels are free to rotate and that they do not snag on the undercarriage leg.
- Check that the wheel retaining mechanism - such as collets etc. - are fully tightened. A good permanent method for attaching the wheels is to solder washers to the inside and outside of the wheel.
